Type:

Production:
54 exemplaries among which, 6 cabriolets.

Chassis number :
801 to 803 (the V303 of the official presentation), 38/1 to 38-44 (34 exemplaries VW38 of 1938) then 1-01 to 1-46 (17 exemplaries VW39 of 1939/1940).

1938 : the KdF-wagen (" strenght through joy " car), type V303, is presented to the public in three versions : sedan, convertible and cabriolet. It differentiates itself from the later models by its over-riders on the bumbers, its round stop light (that will become the plate light), its decklid corners with square angles, its smooth hub caps, its central exhaust pipe and its 48 ventilation slots (reduced to 42 for the serial production).

.

Main noticeable details :
The very first KdF (" strengh though Joy ") had revolving door handles, decklid square corners, a special rear-light, a central exhaust pipe, and smooth hub caps. The ventilation slots were 48 (later 42). The bumpers over-riders were round and quite high, then will become thin and reversed. As from 1939, you pull the articulated door handles and the hub caps receive the big KdF crest. The 54 exemplaries produced before the beginning of the war were made by Reutter in Stuttgart.

During the war, a military version of the KdF, type 82E is manufactured by mounting Kubelwagen suspensions on a sedan body and chassis. Some exemplaries, like this type 87, are equipped withe the four by four system from the Schwimmwagen.

(The KdF being produced on the same link as the kübelwagen, the chassis and engine numbers are placed between the Type 82 numbers, whose chassis numbers start by number 2).

.

Main noticeable details :
The KdF production starts at Wolfsburg in July 1941. The 92 and 82e are identical, in chassis and body, to the Type 60, but receive the Kübel suspension with a 290 mm clearance. Only few Type 87 will be produced (possibly even only one prototype). Named the Kommandeurwagen, it uses the schwimm mechanic and has 4x4 wheels.

The hub caps change during production from the VW 39 model, they become flat with a central embossing bearing a small KdF sign. Early March 1943, the engine passes from 985 cc to 1131 cc (24 to 25 bhp). Only 7 sun-roofed sedans are manufactured. The production stops on August 17, 1944.
