For the 1971 model, the doors structure is
reinforced for more safety. In August
1970, the inside rearview mirror is in
black plastic and can be removed in case
of shock.

Still
in 1971, disks brakes appear with
the 1700 and the new gear-box.
The rear drums and the body are
also reinforced. Also, the
rear-lights are of a new
model.

As for the engine, the connecting gear is
a 200 mm Fichtek and Sachs, dry monodisc
and always actioned by a cable passing in
the center of the chassis.

Please
note that the mechanism was with
helicoidal springs until August 1970, and
then on with a diaphragm. Still in August
1970, the 1600 heads are now double
admission, and the engine develops 50 hp
at 4000 revolutions/mn. They often "
crackle ", but the Volkswagen people are
already aware of the problem
During
the same month, the oil radiator is now in
aluminium and shifted to the front of the
engine (" Dog House " turbine : the
radiator is in a " dog house " instead of
being in the turbine &endash; thus the air
arrives to the cylinders without going
through the
radiator).

In
1971, ventilation flaps of the
engine become slightly larger as
the 1700 Type 4 requires more
air. The wheels are in 5 holes
and the chromed hub cap is
specific to the Deluxe version
(VW Car).

The
wheels were until then 5j/14 in steel.
They had the same design as on the Split
Bus (Baby Moon), and this until August
1970. Afterwards, they became 5,5j/14 with
4 notches to ventilate the brakes. This
date corresponds to the introduction of of
disks brakes and the Mercedes central
pattern (5/112). With the front disks, the
path is widened by 2 mm. The callipers are
in two assembled parts with 6 bolts. The
calliper is fixed to the stub by 2 bolts.
The diameter of the disks is 278,2 mm and
their width is 13 mm. The callipers
pistons are of diameter 54 mm (2 by
calliper). The master-cylinder is smaller,
with a more restricted diameter. Finally,
on the disks models, a circuit pressure
regulator is situated at the rear, this
because of the big difference of power.
Until August 1970, wheels were painted in
white, they still are but later on
silvered. The Baby Moon hub caps are then
light grey except on the Deluxe Microbus
where they are chromed.
