Equipped by Westfalia (on the left) or as original (on the right) the Pick-Up serie of Bay-Window represents approximately 10% of the global Bus sales.

It develops 66 hp at 4800 revolutions/mn. Its oil capacity is of 3,5 liters. Its crankshaft is better oiled and its valves have a diameter of 39,3 (inlet) and 33 (exhaust). The 1700 is fixed to its box by 8 bolts, two Solex carburettors 34PDSIT feed it. Thanks to this new engine motorisation, the 400 meters are done en 21,4 seconds, its maximal speed being 125 km/hr and its consumption diminishes (11,4 liters/100 km according to VW !). Last, until August 1971, the rear skirt will have been removable. It will then be lead-welded for this vintage. Last little point, the master-cylinder owns two contactors : one for the stop lights, and one for the pressure witness-light of the braking system. To keep it switched off, the pressure in both circuits must be equivalent. If everything functions properly, the witness-light switches off after starting.

In August 1971, the gas trap door is repositioned to be accessible with the sliding door opened. At the same date, big rear lights with backward-lights included are appearing. The rear corners are thus changed : the engine air inlets are wider. For the same vintage, the driver seat is modified to allow different positions. The back of the seat is redesigned for a better comfort (sides) at the front. Also, " louvers " appear in the door panels, in order to improve the air extraction (red lever). Something to remember, the presence of a diagnostic plug for the battery with a probe for the electrolyte level. But more generally, the global diagnostic plug is situated at the right of the engine compartment.

Thanks to it, one can now diagnose 86 defaults and this, thanks to a calculating bench. The first results of the sales being issued, the surprise is that the Type 2 Bay-Window is the most sold utility vehicle in Europe. But August 1971 is a major turn as far as the mechanical aspect is concerned, as besides for the pick-up, the famous 1700 Type 4 appears (boring-out X run : 90 x 66 mm). It is accompanied by a brake-booster. Its turbine is at the end of the crankshaft, and its cooling case is obviously new.

During all these years of Bay-Windows production, the " ambulance " model was always a followed-up version of the production.
