At
the moment of the petrol
depression in 1973, Volkswagen
make efforts in their research
regarding the Bay-Window Bus
engine. The result will be only
few mechanical changes, and the
Type 2 of 1973, 1974 and 1975
models are pratically the same.
For the engine, the Type 4 with
1800 cm3 replaces the Type 4 with
1700 cm3. It is proposed either
with carburation or injection,
the carburation version will
however be available only one
year. While the injection version
will be maintained during two
years.

Funny
enough, the specificity disappears in
1973, Volkswagen considering that
everyboday can identify the Bus without
this plate, and, still because of the
depression, for economical purposes !
The next vintage will bear this signature
again, but in a " classical " format.
Still in August 1973, a new option
appears. It is the splasher of the
windscreen washer for headlights, situated
in the guards of the bumpers. For the rest
of the outside aspect, no change.
Inside, and for some markets, the Bus is
available with 11 seats. Funny enough,
Germany is not one of these privileged
markets. Its is declined with a 2-seat
backseat at the front (plus the driver), 2
x 3 seats at the rear and 2 folding tip-up
seats fixed to the panels on both sides of
the spare wheel, with tubular structures.
On these models, both doors are sliding to
guarantee a quick access. At that same
time, the shelf under the dashboard is
optional, and on the Microbus model, the
tinted windscreen and the reclining rear
seat are also optional. Mechanically
speaking, one unique new point, the
alternator with regulator either
incorporated or placed near the
battery.

As
for the body, some specifications are to
be remembered for the U.S. models that, on
the door and near the bumbers, have an
orange circular reflector. The same can be
found behind the archs of the rear wheels,
but in red version. A few months later, in
August 1973, they will become
rectangular.

Closer
to us, a well known characteristic for
this model's enthusiasts appears on the
tail-gate. It's a small metallic black
plate with embossed letters in a shiny
alloy and upper-case letters. The name
Wolkswagen can be read.
