After having started in 1973 a study on new engines, Volkswagen introduce the Type 4 engine with 2 L which, incidently, replaces the 1800 cm3. Based on an boring-out of 94 mm and a run of 71 mm, this 1970 cm3 offers a power of 70 hp at 4200 revolutions. It is the same engine as the 1800 cm3, the only difference being the run and the boring-out.

Still in 1975, an injection system referenced Bosh AFC is proposed on the 1800 cm3 for the U.S. market and more locally California ! To come back to the 2 liters engine, this one imposes new ratios at the automatic gear-box level, and a clutch of 228 mm is now requested for the manual gear-boxes.

For the body, the tail-gate and the hood locks are now in black plastic. In September of the same year, the brakes callipers ATE are replaced by similar models of the brand GIRLING, except for the brake pads that pass from 12 mm to 14 mm of thickness. The gas tank, placed under the driver seat, has a small window to check the level.
