For this vintage, few modifications. Mechanically, the heads are modified and receive bigger valves, the admission pipes are wider and the compression rate passes from 7,2 to 7,8 to 1.
Also, the cam shaft and the tappet-rods are different.
The clutch passes from 180 mm to 200 mm.
The brakes pads at the rear are bigger and pass from 40 mm to 45 mm, while the braking surface passes from 830 cm2 to 880 cm2.
In option on the Variant, the maximal weight passes from 365 kg to 460 kg. This is obtained thanks to more rigid dampers, torsion bars and bigger tyres as well as the harder rubber levels. But careful when driving empty !

tandis que la surface de freinage passe de 830 cm2 a 880 cm2.
En option sur les Variant, la charge maximale passe de 375kg à 460kg. Ceci est obtenu grâce au montage d'amortisseurs plus rigides, de barres de torsions et de pneus plus gros ainsi que de paliers caoutchoucs plus durs. Mais attention à la conduite à vide !

1963

The VW 1500 63/64 vintage remains unchanged. A new model, the 1500S, joins the range. It is equipped with a more luxuous inside, and a double carburettor engine developping 54 bhp at 4200 revs/mn. This engine is available on both models as well as on the Variant utility car delivered without lateral window.
The engine cooling is controlled by a thermostat. The drums are bigger and the surface of friction passes to 960 cm2.
The chromed half circle of the steering wheel, controlling the horn, is replaced by a push button at the center of the steering wheel.
No hub cap painted logo anymore.

On the basic VW 1500 and Variant, the deflectors mouldings and their frame are now painted, the lateral rear windows are static, the reflectors and the lock of the right door are suppressed. The dressing is modified. The arm rests at the rear as well as the accessory pocket, the clock, the sun-visor and the intermittent windscreen wipers are suppressed. The rear left ashtray (the right one is from the Type 1) also disappears as well as the seats lock and the decklid light.

On the 1500S and the Variant S, the boot handle is chromed.The indicators are bigger and the plate light of the Sedan has a chromed element with an S, lateral moudings and the counter passes from 140 to 160 km/h.
In option on the Variant S : a rearview mirror and a two-tints paint.
